People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA) Johannesburg, South Africa People Opposing Women Abuse was established in 1979 as a response to the high levels of violence against women experienced in the community. POWA is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that has effectively been operational for the past 23 years. POWA was primarily initiated by volunteers and offered services to women who experienced domestic violence, sexual harassment, rape, and adult survivors of incest. The Organization has a strong gender sensitive stance and seeks to empower women through the process of counseling, education, advocacy and lobbying.
