The instructions to the crew were prepared by students operating the first ever student control room. The GeoCam POCC was located at the Medical University of South Carolina in the same facility that will be used to house the South Carolina Regional EarthKAM SMOC. The students performed functions much like those in an EarthKAM center except that the Internet was not yet utilized in support of the mission, and the pictures were not available until the shuttle landed and the film developed.
It is hard to believe that way back in the olde days of 1993, the Internet was largely unused outside of the university and government agency world. You could not even get weather satellite images via the web. The Internet has helped shape EarthKAM just as it has reshaped so much of our lives.
